Turkish Rice, known as Pilav, is a beloved dish in Turkish cuisine. It’s a flavorful and aromatic rice dish typically made with long-grain rice, broth, and often enhanced with sautéed onions or other aromatic vegetables. Perfect as a side dish or a base for stews and grilled meats, this recipe will guide you in preparing perfectly fluffy and fragrant rice.

Ingredients for Turkish Rice

  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 2 cups water or chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 small, finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup, diced optional: peas or carrots

Instructions to Prepare Turkish Rice

  1. Rinse the long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents sticking.
  2. In a medium pot, melt the butter or heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and soft.
  3. Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir gently to coat the rice in the butter or oil, cooking for about 2-3 minutes until slightly toasted.
  4. Pour in the water or chicken broth, and add the salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. Stir to combine, then increase the heat to high and bring to a boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed.
  6. After cooking, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes to steam.
  7. Fluff the rice gently with a fork, removing the bay leaf. If desired, fold in the diced peas or carrots.
  8. Serve hot as a side dish with your favorite main course.
