Turkish Rice, known as Pilav, is a beloved dish in Turkish cuisine. It’s a flavorful and aromatic rice dish typically made with long-grain rice, broth, and often enhanced with sautéed onions or other aromatic vegetables. Perfect as a side dish or a base for stews and grilled meats, this recipe will guide you in preparing perfectly fluffy and fragrant rice.
Ingredients for Turkish Rice
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- 2 cups water or chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- 1 small, finely chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 cup, diced optional: peas or carrots
Instructions to Prepare Turkish Rice
- Rinse the long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents sticking.
- In a medium pot, melt the butter or heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and soft.
- Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir gently to coat the rice in the butter or oil, cooking for about 2-3 minutes until slightly toasted.
- Pour in the water or chicken broth, and add the salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. Stir to combine, then increase the heat to high and bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed.
- After cooking, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes to steam.
- Fluff the rice gently with a fork, removing the bay leaf. If desired, fold in the diced peas or carrots.
- Serve hot as a side dish with your favorite main course.
